Working
with stakeholders to achieve mutual outcomes
and to address issues in contention before they
become major challenges is an essential part
of fostering positive organisational relationships
and building social capital with stakeholders.
ACCSR uses its exclusive stakeholder mapping
and engagement tool, the Stakeholder
360® to
help our clients understand and navigate their
organisation’s network of stakeholders,
predict socio-political risk, and develop responsive
strategies that facilitate new understandings,
new coalitions, and new ways of achieving common
interests.
Stakeholder 360®
The
Stakeholder 360® is a combination
of research and facilitated stakeholder engagement
designed to identify perceptions of an organisation’s
social and environmental performance, and to
guide the development of strategies for building
and maintaining stakeholder relationships.
The Stakeholder 360® was developed at
Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, Canada,
by social scientist, Dr
Robert Boutilier. It
has been validated and refined in a series
of international studies in several countries,
including Australia, Canada, Papua New Guinea,
South Africa and the US.

Using the Stakeholder 360® to
measure social capital
Collaborative
relationships between an organisation and
its stakeholders have characteristics that
have come to be known as social capital. In
the context of corporate-stakeholder relationships,
social capital is generated by the three “T’s”,
- Talking – communication: how much
the parties talk to each other,
- Trusting – mutual trust: how much
they trust each other, and
- Thinking – shared goals: how much
they see “eye-to-eye”.
The Stakeholder 360® measures these sources
of social capital, establishes the level of interdependence
and the nature of the “stake” that
the stakeholder holds and reveals the key issues
that are important to address in relationship
maintenance strategies. Social capital and
motivation to engage are the basis on which
organisations and their stakeholders can work
towards meeting shared goals or ameliorating
shared problems, as depicted below.

How is the Stakeholder 360® implemented?
The
survey instrument reviews the social capital
existing between an organisation and its various
stakeholders by measuring the levels of communication,
trust and shared goals in the relationship.
This allows an evaluation of quantitative and
qualitative data to determine each stakeholder’s
key issues and the nature of the relationship.
The tool can also be used to identify other
important stakeholder groups.
What does the Stakeholder 360® reveal
about an organisation?
The Stakeholder
360® combines research
and facilitated stakeholder engagement to uncover
the drivers of an organisation’s social
performance and guides future stakeholder strategies.
